Children and their games, huh? Over on seo-guy there’s a veeery long thread which has spawned an SEO contest on about page 27!
Our goal is to see who can get the best ranking for the phrase “simple seo” on Google: http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=simple+seo
- Me, promoting this blog and in particular my simple seo page.
- Stu (aka smindsrt), who has an SEO business
- Mike (aka SiteTutor), who has a variety of web based businesses and has just been to the Search Engine Strategies conference so will be bursting with ideas
- Dreamshop who flogs Economical Search Engine Optimization
I’ll get the pages the others nominate loaded up into DigitalPoint’s Keyword Tracker and post the charts from time to time.
Because it’s small and unofficial it won’t be as fiercely fought as the 2004’s nigritude ultramarine competition but it’ll be fun nonetheless.
I’ve checked out the top ranking sites and none of them are basing their business case on these phrases so we don’t have to feel guilty about ‘playing’ in this space.
Here are today’s results
So far very limited showing for the simple seo, although MSN and Yahoo are telling a different story. I’ve never really focussed on Yahoo so may have to brush up on my SEO for them 😉
Sarah – well done – however I doubt that ANYONE is going use simple seo as a search phrase, apart from the people those who are participating in the so called contest. I think you are just one of 1000K who really have no idea about seo
Hi Peter
the purpose of any seo game is not to annoy real people or impact on their businesses. As with the earlier nigritude ultramarine contest the keywords were chosen because they’re not interfering. As for really having “no idea about seo” I guess that’s your opinion and that’s OK.
Peter,
You sound like a bitter person that can’t make a move in the SERPs. The purpose of this contest is clearly to test the ability to rank for a particular KW – not determine Sarah’s ability to choose KW phrases. IMO she is much wiser than some people in that she choose a phrase that will not interfere with other legitimate phrases.
If you want to see the back story to this contest you should probably drop by the SEO guy forum and while you are there do a bit of reading.
Dreamshop is a later starter but kicking in fast!
6 weeks later and there’s been a big update at Google’s datacenters. And this is how it’s panned out.
An earlier poster summed it up by saying that practically no one will ever search for the term “simple seo”. Ranking for something as obscure as that will be pointless.
